Italians are a noisy bunch….

March 18th 2023

This last week we cycled around Italian’s “high heel” peninsula with tailwind  all the way down to the tip

….then somebody switched the handle and two days of tail wind back up from Santa Maria di Leuca. Couldn’t have planned it better if we tried. Sunny and strong wind to our favor. Got invited to stay with some cool circus folks and slept between Olive trees.

Circus family…
Best Italian WarmShower dinner ever!

Life on the road has us back!

And then it switched again third of the way back up to the “armpit”…the wind is what I am talking about. It got icy cold. The surrounding beauty disappears in situations like that. The focus on the street only: keep in line, don’t get hit by a car…and then the rain started. Wish I was home…

Perspective changes within minutes and life on the road sucks ass (again)!

…until it changes (again) and now we are in Taranto loving it so much, we are staying another day. Not that it is any warmer and the wind still presents its icy characteristics, but can’t beat the price (35 euros per night)

and the surroundings. We came through here before when we took the train from Naples to be in time for our house/pet sit gig in Squinzano near Lecce but we just blasted through the beautiful city which deserves a lot more attention. Instead we were weaving hurriedly around little alleys lined with cats and ancient story telling buildings, waterfront roads with the desire to stop every 10 meters and now we can and we do.

You’ve got to love the Italians! They are standing around in tight places when it is too narrow to get passt them, they (mostly) don’t see a reason to move just a tiny bit out of the way. The cafes are crowded at the counter with happy loudly chatting people drinking their coffee and eating their morning pastries. If you want to order something you either need to scream over their heads, or bully your way to the front. Further more they love to make noise…..may it be on the road honking (seems Italian cars don’t have brakes….only horns) yelling at each other across the streets, out the windows between laundry fluttering in the wind or playing music for all to enjoy. There is a flare you can’t beat.

Yes! We are in Italy!
