We are not in Germany anymore….or Kansas or anything close to languages I have known, or being able to speak. New land and learning territory.
We’ve been rolling with the river Elbe through the old (and remote) “Eastgermany”, during a truly golden October.
I couldn’t tell where we left the former “American sector” - riding south from Berlin. To me it seemed “very east” very remote and magically beautiful. Die Elbe is so gorgeous winding its way through four countries, but mostly through Germany (65.5%) and the Czech Republic (33.7%) but also stretches through Austria (0.6%) and Poland (0.2%).We met up with the Elbe before Dresden, near Riesa and been following it south and upstream to Prague.
The Sandstone Mountains
It rises in the Giant Mountains of northern Czech Republic before traversing much of Bohemia, then Germany and flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, 110km northwest of Hamburg. Its total length is 1,094km (680mi)
I am “blown away” by its diversity of landscapes and breathtaking beauty. Every day brought another “jaw slacking” surprise of stunning views of the Sandstone Mountains.
Elbe and us flowing through Dresden.
Continuing with the flow to Prague.
Prague was crazy! We didn’t stay long, the weather got rainy and the cobble stones combined with the most numerous street cars on narrow roads (mind also the many tracks!) I have ever seen. We rolled in on a Thursday and the streets were PACKED with tourists. We had trouble walking our bicycles and when we tried to ride them, we feared for our lives with every pedal stroke. Though the hostel we landed was exceptional: friendly, reasonable priced and in a perfect location and if we had reserved our room for the weekend in advance we would have stayed. But the weekend worriers came with a planned vacation and we had to vacate after only one night. Now, here we are, having not only abandoned Prague, but also our beloved river Elbe on our way to Vienna. So far, so good. As the rain continued through Saturday we are staying in Průhonice and are generously, spending our money in a hotel with Swimmingpool and nearby cafes.
Rain or shine, we are on our way again tomorrow. We have left mother Elbe and I am a little nervous riding now without her by my side. 🤷🏼♀️
